A Lesson in Resilience & Kindness
We've all felt the panic of a missed bus, a lost track of time, or the impending doom of a missed appointment. But for 2020 Olympic hurdler, Hansle Parchment (Instagram), the stakes were exponentially higher. On the precipice of his 110-meter hurdle semifinal, a simple transportation mishap threatened to shatter his Olympic dreams.
Lost in the rhythm of his pre-race playlist, Hansle boarded the wrong bus. A careless oversight that could have cost him everything. Instead of roaring towards the track, he found himself adrift on a vessel bound for an aquatic center, a world away from his intended destination.
The clock was ticking, a relentless adversary in this unexpected race against time. Desperate, Hansle sought a lifeline. Rigid Olympic protocols stood in his way, but a glimmer of hope emerged in the form of a volunteer. With unwavering compassion, she defied regulations, providing him with the financial means to secure a taxi.
This selfless act was a catalyst, propelling Hansle back into the heart of the competition. Against all odds, he not only qualified for the finals but ascended to the pinnacle of his sport, claiming the gold medal.
In a heartwarming display of gratitude, Hansle embarked on a mission to find his guardian angel. With the Olympic gold hanging proudly around his neck, he reunited with the volunteer, showering her with praise and appreciation. Her small act of kindness had ignited a spark that led to an Olympic triumph.
Hansle Parchment's journey is a testament to the power of human connection. It's a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and kindness can prevail. His story is a golden chapter in the annals of sportsmanship, a beacon of inspiration that illuminates the path for athletes and ordinary people alike.
Our theme this year is “Travel in Pairs” and there are several ways that this story helps to underline the important messages implied in the theme. First, a travel companion that day would have helped Hansle avoid the wrong bus. Second, even though he was headed in the wrong direction and nearly lost his chances at the gold, a guardian angel showed up. As you venture into the new school year remember that you will face challenges, you will at times feel like you are on the wrong bus or heading in the wrong direction, but keep your eyes open for the guardian angels to walk with you and help you carry the burdens of life and teaching.
What can teachers learn from Parchment's experience?
Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks is a crucial life skill.
Empathy and Kindness: The volunteer's small act of generosity had a profound impact.
The Unexpected: Life is full of surprises. Parchment's story reminds us that even the smallest actions can have the biggest consequences.

Parchment's journey is a powerful reminder that even in the most challenging circumstances, hope, determination, and human kindness can prevail. Matt, Heid, and myself want you to know that we are here for you and are praying for you and your students as you begin this new year.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
