“In January of 2017 I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a cancer in the lymphatic system. Before the diagnosis, I had an ominous feeling that something was going on. I've had many kidney stones and so I've had multiple CT scans. The previous year, a large lymph node showed up that wasn't there six months prior.

Around this same time, I had a desire to get into education. I had completed my doctorate in nursing from Southern, and now I wanted to teach. One of my classmates had been teaching at Sahmyook University in South Korea but was now moving to Africa. So, she was like ‘bring Jeanne over.’

I got my official call on a Thursday morning, the same day I went to get the PET scan. I remember thinking ‘well, if I got this call to go to Sahmyook, then this is just a scare, right?’ I had already gotten my passport. The next day I gave verbal notice to my employer then took my visa picture. At this same time, I had mom and dad pick up my CT report. That evening, I looked at the report and that’s when I realized, ‘okay, I’m not going to Korea.’

I ended up working through three cycles of chemotherapy before going on medical leave. It was during this time that I searched through stories in the Bible to build faith. I read on characters like Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, Gideon, and Elijah. I learned how these characters were able to depend on God.

I did four PET scans. One before the diagnosis, and one after each two rounds of chemo. I had to trust God that, even though I didn't feel better, the healing was happening. I read 1 Peter 5:7-10 and wrote this in my Bible, ‘faith equals trusting and praising God when no evidence is visible.’ When you're going through chemotherapy you can't see what it is doing on the outside. Everything is happening inside at the cellular level. Still, I could trust and praise God that the healing was taking place even when I had not seen the reports.

I am cancer free now. I tell my patients that even though we have different battles, God is the healer. When you look at the stories of the Bible you can say, ‘God did this for that person, He can do the same for me.’”
